Authorities Friday identified a man who was fatally shot in a possible gang-related attack in Long Beach and whose killer or killers remained at large.

Joseph Patton Jr., 24, of Torrance died at a hospital, said Long Beach police Sgt. Bradley Johnson.

Officers went to the 1900 block of Myrtle Avenue about 2:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of a shooting.

“Upon arrival, officers found (Patton) in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso,” Johnson said.

Detectives determined that the shooting had occurred in 900 block of Dayman Street, and that Patton had driven to the 1900 block of Myrtle Avenue, where his vehicle crashed.

“Further investigation led officers to a residence in the 900 block of Dayman (Street) as a possible location of interest,” Johnson said. “Officers surrounded the location and made attempts to call anyone who was inside to exit, but there was no response. The Long Beach Police Department SWAT team was then activated, and the incident was handled as a possible barricade situation.”

SWAT eventually deployed tear gas into the residence, and a woman came outside, Johnson said.

“No other occupants were found in the house,” according to Johnson, who said the woman was interviewed by detectives and released.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call detectives Mark Mattia, Adrian Garcia, or Donald Goodman at (562) 570-7244; or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
