A 26-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of strangling his mother during a dispute in Orange.

Brandon Gabriel Sanchez was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to Orange County Jail records.

Sanchez called police about 2:45 p.m. Monday to report that he strangled his mother during a dispute, according to Orange police Sgt. Phil McMullin.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was choked to death in a house in the 5800 block of East Ridgemont Court, McMullin said.

She lived there with Sanchez and her husband, who was the suspect’s stepfather, McMullin said. Sanchez remained on scene until police arrived and he was later booked on suspicion of murder, the sergeant said.

Sanchez was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on probation violations, according to court records.

Sanchez pleaded guilty April 12 of last year to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of drugs, all misdemeanors, and was placed on three years of informal probation and ordered to participate in a drug program, according to court records. The dates of the violations were July 4 and July 7 of 2015.
