A man suspected in a San Francisco assault, who was shot while running from desert officers in Blythe earlier this week, pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempted murder of a peace officer Thursday.
On Tuesday, officers from the California Highway Patrol were informed that Hakim Price Oden, 20, a suspect in a San Francisco area assault, may be in the desert area, Sgt. Wallace Clear of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said. About 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, the CHP located an unattended vehicle matching one associated with Oden on the shoulder of Interstate 10 east of Corn Springs Road near Blythe.
Soon after, the CHP received reports of a man attempting to flag down vehicles not far from the abandoned vehicle, Clear said.
“The officers located the adult male, later identified as Hakim Oden, on the shoulder of the highway and attempted to contact him,” Clear said. “Suspect Oden ran from the officers who pursued him on foot. While pursuing Oden, an officer involved shooting occurred.”
Oden then surrendered to officers and was taken into custody at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, jail records show.
He was taken to a local hospital to treat minor injuries, according to Clear, while neither of the officers were injured.
Thursday afternoon, Oden pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempted murder on a peace officer with a firearm enhancement.
The Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit assumed the investigation into the officer-involved shooting based on the circumstances and location of the shooting. It is unclear if the officers were put on administrative leave.
Officials did not immediately confirm why Oden was charged with attempted murder on a peace officer or any details regarding the San Francisco assault.
Oden is being held on $2.2 million bail at the Indio jail, court records show.
He is expected back in court on April 9.
