A man was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1991 rape and murder of a 22-year-old fashion school student whose body was found in a burning car in South Los Angeles.
Ahjeeb Jamal Boyd, 47, was convicted Feb. 1 of first-degree murder and jurors found the special circumstance allegation of rape to be true.
Firefighters responding to the vehicle fire in the early morning hours of Sept. 29, 1991, found Jill Dara Sampson’s body after the blaze had been put out.
Sampson was a student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.
DNA evidence recovered from the victim tied Boyd to the cold case murder and he was arrested in February 2014.
