A man who allegedly shot his estranged wife in front of their young children on Christmas Day in Bellflower could face up to life in prison if convicted of murder and four counts of assault with a firearm, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
Santiago Palacios Salgado, 56, pleaded not guilty Monday to the five felony counts, and also faces a gun allegation in connection with the Dec. 25 death of Gabriela Romo-Garcia.
Salgado allegedly went to a home in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue, displayed a handgun and fatally shot the 41-year-old woman. Sheriff’s deputies and medical personnel arrived soon afterward and took him to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries.
The couple had two children — a 6-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter — who were at the shooting scene, but were not hurt, authorities said.
Salgado remains jailed in lieu of $3.1 million bail. He is due back in a Norwalk courtroom on March 7, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
