A judge has found that a 25-year-old man who pleaded no contest to killing his mother at his downtown Los Angeles apartment while she was visiting from Taiwan was insane at the time of the crime.
Chao Ming Chen pleaded no contest to first-degree murder for the Feb. 1, 2015, killing of his mother, Yi Tung Weng, and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mildred Escobedo subsequently found him not guilty by reason of insanity, according to Deputy District Attorney Colby Cano.
Los Angeles police officers responding to a 911 call found the 48-year-old woman’s body inside her son’s apartment in the 1300 block of Figueroa Street. She had been asphyxiated.
Chen was arrested early the next day by Los Angeles police.
He is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Sept. 13 for a hearing to determine where he will be placed. The judge made the insanity ruling Thursday.
