A man convicted of fatally shooting and stabbing a maintenance worker near a Target store parking lot in Van Nuys was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in state prison.
Erick Renteria, 27, was convicted Nov. 7, 2016, of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was charged in the July 22, 2014, stabbing and shooting death of Francisco Miguel, 48, who was part of a three-person crew pressure-washing the store parking lot at Sepulveda Boulevard and Hatteras Street.
Miguel was attacked after he went to check on a truck near the lot and was sitting inside the vehicle when he was attacked.
“He was just a hard-working guy who appeared to be at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Los Angeles police Detective Robert Bub said shortly after the killing.
One of the other workers heard the attack and called 911.
When officers arrived, Renteria was standing outside the truck and stabbing Miguel, according to police.
