A 29-year-old suspected killer was charged with murder Tuesday for allegedly gunning down a victim with a tragic past in the parking lot of the Stadium Promenade in Orange on Friday night as the center was bustling with moviegoers and diners.
Authorities did not disclose a possible motive in the shooting death of the victim who was from Philadelphia. His life ended about three years after his small son was killed in a fire.
The alleged murderer, Trevor Lee Brockington of Riverside, also faces a sentence-enhancing allegation of the discharge of a gun causing death. He faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted.
Police were called at 6:11 p.m. on a report of shots fired in the parking lot of the center in the 1500 block of West Katella Avenue and found Patrick Sanyeah mortally wounded, according to Orange Police Department Sgt. Phil McMullin.
Sanyeah, who lost his 4-year-old son, Patrick, in a blaze in Philadelphia on July 5, 2014, died at a hospital.
After Sanyeah lost his son in the fire, he told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “My son is burned to ashes, and I’m not going to get over it.”
The motive and relationship, if any, between the defendant and the 34- year-old victim are so far unclear.
The Stadium Promenade houses 10 eateries and pubs and the Cinemark Stadium 25 movie theater and is about a half-mile west of the Honda Center.
