A trio of murder suspects remained in custody Monday following a shooting over the weekend.
Palm Springs Police Department officers received a call from a hospital Friday at 10:26 p.m., according to a department statement, informing them about a male gunshot victim who was allegedly injured at a downtown parking structure on the 200 block of 200 Block of South Indian Canyon Drive.
After officers located and interviewed the friends who had transported him to the hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries and died overnight. A Riverside County Coroner’s Office report later identified the decedent as 31-year-old Adam Ortega of Desert Hot Springs.
At the crime scene, officers gathered information that led to the identification of 20-year-old Palm Springs resident Jorge Maciel as a suspect, according to the statement. Detectives and officers initiated a traffic stop on Maciel, who was departing a related location with Cathedral City residents Michael Genera and Eliberto Genera, both 23.
Police deployed a K9 unit to apprehend Maciel, while Michael and Eliberto Genera were detained shortly after.
Further investigation led officers to believe that the shooting happened in an attempted robbery.
All three suspects are expected to be charged with felony counts of murder and attempted robbery, with Maciel expected to face an additional charge for assault with a firearm, during a scheduled arraignment Wednesday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
The department is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information related to the incident was encouraged to contact Detective Escallada at 760-323-8129 or Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
