The accused killer of a Long Beach mother who died holding her child in her arms will be back in court March 7 after he pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges Monday.

John Kevin McVoy Jr., 35, of Corona, allegedly murdered the mother and shot her husband in the head after a violent argument. McVoy faces a murder charge and two counts of attempted murder, along with a gun allegation.

McVoy, who is being held on $5.025 million bail, is due back in court March 7, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

McVoy allegedly shot Susan Garcia and her husband Jan. 10 after going to their home in the 6300 block of Knight Avenue and getting into an argument with the couple.

Susan Garcia, 33, was shot in the upper body as she was holding her toddler and was pronounced dead at the scene, and her husband was shot in the head, prosecutors said.

The toddler — who is named along with Garcia’s husband as a victim in the attempted murder counts — was not struck by gunfire, but fell to the ground with her mother, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Other people in the house disarmed and subdued McVoy immediately after the shooting, according to authorities.

If convicted as charged, he could face a potential life prison sentence, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
