A 54-year-old alleged killer was charged Tuesday with the stabbing murder of a man in a Baldwin Park fight.
There was no word of what sparked the argument that led to the deadly fight, but a large kitchen knife believed to have been used in the killing was recovered at the scene, according to a sheriff’s official.
Steven Barron was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $2 million bail while awaiting arraignment Jan. 10 in connection with last Friday’s killing of Gilbert Ochoa Jr., 43.
Baldwin Park police officers responded to a disturbance call at a home in the 4000 block of Harlan Avenue and found Ochoa down on the driveway and Barron with an injury to his forearm, authorities said.
The victim, who lived in Baldwin Park, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ochoa was in the garage of a residence in a visit to the person who owns the home when the incident began, according to Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
“The suspect … who was the homeowner’s tenant, entered the garage and started an argument with the victim that led to a fight. The victim struck the suspect with a metal pipe but the suspect then gained control of the pipe, striking the victim and stabbing him with a knife.”
Suspect Barron was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained when he was hit with the pipe. He was then taken to the Baldwin Park police station, where he was booked on suspicion of murder, Saldana said.
It wasn’t known what the third person at the scene — the homeowner — was doing during the fatal fight. The homeowner, however, was not injured.
